"Help me ... Help ... get her away ... it ..."

Silence. Only sounds of spring night; the wind, lightly buzzing insect, very quiet, barely perceptible sound of the footsteps of a small animal in the grass covered with frost, neighborhood dog's bark, who was alarmed by something. But it were the natural sounds of the evening life, which is not quite asleep. In addition, the deep silence enveloped the small town named Hole Valley, which 300 years ago, some idiot named a hole. Now, however, the name didn't fit here because the city has grown and modernized, and although it certainly was not like Los Angeles or Miami, it  was not a village. Neither hole. And the more to add, not village-hole, in slight translation a place where is more dinosaurs than people. Silence was also five minutes ago, before the dull, audible only for one man cry, disturbed the peace of Ian Carr, who was lying in his bed. Although he didn't open his eyes, because the dream was too deep to be able to just stop.

"Help ... she ... bite ... Help ..."

And again the same. Ian turned restlessly to the other side, knocking the pillow on the ground. The threat was slowly penetrated his consciousness, so one strange sound more was enough to...

"Help!"

Ian suddenly opened his eyes and just as suddenly sat down on the bed. For a moment he was coming to himself, until he looked around, but he was absolutely certain that the call is not coming from his bedroom, or the bedroom of his two sons, which remained closer to the kitchen. They were quite far from his room, but he knew without checking that it was not a cry belonging to Jesse, nor to Kyle. In Ian's case  a person who just screamed, may be a few blocks away or at the other end of the town. It could be anyone. It often happened that he had a vision or was hearing voices in his sleep. Visions and voices also was occuring to him during the day and always concerned something bad, and sometimes terrible. That's why he joined the police.

Again, he looked around the room, this time to collect thoughts. He tried to catch cry back. He sat there for a minute, then suddenly something whispered softly in his head:

"Take it ... Take ... Take ..."

Ian with quick movement jumped to the floor and ran to the window. The street was deserted, but the dog of Meens was barking fiercely. Carr noted that his head is turned toward the house of Eddie Smart, adjacent to the police station, where he, Ian, worked. In the same direction he he was drew by unerring intuition, which always led him to the right place.

Something bad has happened to Eddie.

Without a second thought he grabbed pants, socks and shoes, put on quickly and also quietly walked out of the bedroom, being careful not to wake the boys. Surely they would argue, because they never stand up to the school as needed. He walked briskly and carefully pulled the entrance door handle . It creaked, but not loudly enough to wake Jesse, and the more Kyle.

He took the coat from the hanger and came out with relief. The cold enveloped him, the frosty wind blew at his face. He rubbed his hands and looked at a nearby lawn. It was covered with frost, as the roofs of buildings and fences, as always in March. He hated that weather, because you never know if it was still winte orspring was already there; the calendar rather indicated this second season. He rubbed his hands again and left the stairs, being careful not to slip on the frozen rain water. At the police station, a light was burning, but they have not heard what he heard. He was all alone and would prefer that even one person was now on the street, in case something happened to him. He would even want the dog of Meens here with him, though no doubt scathing pet would bite him. He looked anxiously at the Smart's house and he had a really strong feeling inside that something is really terrible, and even he can not remedy. Despite this, he braced himself and went in that direction. As he approached, the feeling increased, and told him that he should not go in, and common sense was adding to go to the police, which was separated from him only by few steps. But he knew how much time take such steps, then it may be too late.

Eddie's house was large, one of the largest on the street. It hadn't a terrace, so Ian just stood at the door. The light was burning in the two largest rooms, and the rest of the house was submerged in darkness. He walked slowly, and after hesitating a moment he knocked softly. No one answered. He knocked louder and waited. Again, no response.

"Sure, how he could to approach, if something is killing him" he muttered to himself and threw a glance at the lowest window, leading to the living room. It was as he supposed - Ed was never locking it when he was at home, because of the proximity of the town police station and safety. So far it proved itself and helped Ian's matter. He grabbed his fingers pulling the bottom edge up, pushed the shutter firmly, then jumped off the window sill. The window itself  closed by the wind. He found himself in a bright, large lounge, where there was only a TV, a small wardrobe, sofa, armchair and a small little table on which stood two full beers and half-eaten bag of crisps. Ed was not here, but Ian did not expect to find him here, because if he had cried in the living room, all would heard it, and certainly the police. Anyway, in one way or another, the police heard him in his person and wanted to search the entire apartment, up until he finds the owner. Carr moved to a neighboring, this time dark, room, but Ed wasn't here too. He was also not in the kitchen, the bedroom, the next bright living room, the bathroom. He was not also in three other rooms that he would be willing to sight a little bit more, but had no time for detailed examination. Besides, they were very dark, and he did not want to turn on the light so as not to frighten the person who was probably here. Finally, he  always had a gun in his coat pocket, and if someone had attacked him, he could defend himself.

He didn't check yet only one room - a small, almost empty room in which Smart rested after work. It was inside the house, and his instinct led him there right now. Carefully passed through a small corridor open at one end like the balcony and stood at the door. He pressed an external contact, which lit the lamp in the green room. If there was someone dangerous, he preferred to see him. But when he wanted to go inside, the door opened just for a centimeter. Something was blocking it from inside. He pulled out a weapon, he took a running start and hit with full force in the door. He heard the sound of shuffling, the door opened and he came in, stumbling over something lying on the floor.

They were the legs of Ed Smart. But when Ian got up and looked at his face, he was certain he was dead. Someone with such a face could not simply live. It was a body. But such a body, what Carr wouldn't dream of in worst nightmare.
Yes, I promised myself to write down in English my few novels I wrote in last years. The English chapters are shorter but the main idea of the chapter still remains. You see, translating Polish novel into English is real pain.

So here it is, my horror about mutations, sick experiments and not-so-smart policemen. I love these policemen, they are my type of people.

Have fun reading!

This is so amazing! I love the first paragraph, with all the wonderful sound descriptions. This piece keeps the reader in suspense and the end is a cliffhanger that makes me want to read more! Love it.

Ok, so I really feel the tension. It is there. I feel like on needles, going with Ian to his destination. I even feel the coldness.
You caught me with it, dear.
